Teeth Complications

Sep 26, 2022

Tooth sensitivity, toothache, pain when chewing and bad breath is caused by plaque build-up in the mouth.

Plaque is a type of bacteria that creates acids which damages the minerals within our enamel, slowly disintegrating the protective layer of the teeth.

Plaque can spread through a dental cavity, chip or crack affecting the nerves of our teeth which is what causes irritation, swelling and sometimes abscess; A pocket of pus located at the tip of the tooth root or in the gums on the side of the tooth root.

Your dentist will drain the tooth abscess, or the tooth may need to be removed. If it is not drained the infection can spread to other parts of the body and in worst cases, you may develop sepsis, a possibly fatal infection.

Symptoms

  • Constant throbbing
  • Pain/discomfort with touch, chewing
  • Fever
  • Swelling which can lead to difficulty in breathing
  • Very bad breath

Possible causes of abscess

  • Food and drink products high in refined sugar
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Week immune system
  • Genes
  • Deficiency in Boron, Vitamin D, B12, Zinc and Magnesium
  • Acidic foods, which have been linked to diminished bone strength (Acidic foods include convenience meals, white flour carbohydrates, processed cereals, dairy products, cold cuts, red meat, refined vegetable oils, fried foods, carbonated drinks, alcohol and caffeine)

Treatment & Prevention

Brushing your teeth twice daily for two minutes will minimise the build-up of plaque. Dentists also recommend that you floss, use a mouthwash, change your toothbrush every 3-4 months and visit regularly for check-ups.

Eat healthily, restricting sugary and acidic food and drink products.

Clove or Peppermint Essential Oil or ice can be applied to the affected tooth and swollen gum, using cotton or cotton buds. Raw garlic is useful for killing bacteria within the mouth.
