Tennis Elbow

Sep 08, 2022

Tennis elbow is characterised by intense pain around the outside of the elbow, particularly when lifting, bending, gripping and twisting making it hard to fully extend the arm. Overuse or repetitive use of the same muscles near the elbow joint (the lateral epicondyle) causes tiny tears and inflammation, causing stiffness, swelling and joint pain. The pain can last from 6 months to 2 years but is self-limiting, meaning it can resolve itself without medical treatment.

However, to relieve the pain tennis elbow can be treated through rest, cold compressions, painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, physiotherapy, acupuncture, egoscue (correct, slow) form when stretching, exercising and sometimes cortisone injections or surgery.

Essential Oils

  • Peppermint has been used to alleviate pain
  • Cypress helps to improve circulation
  • Frankincense to help minimise inflammation

Diet & Supplements

Food products high in sugar, salt, unsaturated fats, processed grains and sources of animal protein should be avoided when treating tennis elbow as these can worsen inflammation and joint pain.

Anti-inflammatory supplements or foods rich in these nutrients would be beneficial such as Omega 3, Turmeric, Ginger, Glucosamine and Chondroitin are thought to protect cartilage. Citrus fruits or Citrus Bioflavonoids, foods/supplements high in Potassium, Magnesium and Collagen have been linked to management of tissue health.
